The vivacious Greek conductor interprets two masterpieces

Highly
unexpected Tristia
by French composer
Philippe Hersant

Baden-Baden is one of the most beautiful cities in Germany. In a lovely valley surrounded by gentle rolling hills, the municipality located in the very heart of the Black Forest enjoys a pleasant climate all year round. Built by Friedrich Weinbrenner, its casino – the largest and oldest one in Germany – exudes an irresistible charm. Actress Marlène Dietrich said it was the most beautiful casino in the world! In autumn, nothing beats the exceptional spas that have been gracing the city since ancient times. Take your pick among the hot baths and different temperatures of Friedrichsbad, set in a luxurious, neo-classical structure, and the Caracalla Spa, at the cutting edge of modernity. The ideal opportunity to boost your spirits before the chilly winter!

Our trip offers two invigorating evenings in the company of a young lion in the world of conducting: Teodor Currentzis. The vivacious Greek conductor interprets two masterpieces from the symphonic and choral repertoire alongside his ensemble musicAeterna: the highly unexpected Tristia by French composer Philippe Hersant, and the immortal Requiem by Mozart.

Your program

SATURDAY 2 NOVEMBER – BADEN-BADEN

6.00 pm at the Festspielhaus:
TEODOR CURRENTZIS II
MusicAeterna
Choir and Orchestra of the Perm Opera
Teodor Currentzis: Conductor
– P. Hersant: Tristia

Teodor Currentzis does nothing like everyone else. A visionary interpreter, the Greek conductor only conducts works he loves with passion. As such, we can trust the musician when, since the work’s creation in 2016, he has been conducting the beautiful choral opera Tristia by Philippe Hersant whenever he gets the chance. The music by the French composer (one of the brightest and most accessible of our time) combines French and Russian poetry, voices and instruments with incomparable brilliance. We can honour a conductor like Currentzis for revealing the music of a major voice today, and a French one, to boot!

SUNDAY 3 NOVEMBER – BADEN-BADEN

5.00 pm at the Festspielhaus:

TEODOR CURRENTZIS III

MusicAeterna
Choir and Orchestra of the Perm Opera
Teodor Currentzis: Conductor
Sandrine Piau: Soprano
Paula Murrihy: Alto
Sebastian Kohlhepp: Tenor
Evgeny Stavinsky: Bass

– W.A. Mozart: Requiem in D minor

The stuff of legends and speculations, the Requiem is an absolute icon in the history of music. Unfinished, we don’t know to what extent Franz Xaver Süssmayer used Mozart’s sketches or noted the suffering composer’s utterances, from his watchful place by his bedside. The work combines pieces of choral and soloist bravura, interpreted here by the delightful soprano Sandrine Piau in particular. Together with his ensemble MusicAeterna, Teodor Currentzis presents one of the heights of human genius!
