The Munich Opera has chosen a highly evocative theme for the 19/20 season: Kill your Darlings. Before immersing ourselves in the tragic destinies of two of the most beautiful opera heroines, we can stroll through the remarkable Haidhausen district. Housed in a beautiful Jugendstil residence, the Villa Stuck Museum is an extraordinary architectural extravagance. Tapestries, coffered ceilings and plentiful motifs: nothing is left to chance! Right next door, the Collection Schack exhibits masterpieces by Böcklin and German romantic painters. A joy that we can prolong in the Schwabing district with a drink at Alter Simpl, formerly frequented by Thomas Mann and Hermann Hesse!

In the evening, the tragic destiny of La Traviata performed by Ermonela Jaho will send shivers down our spines. The next day will confirm that opera is a sublimely masochistic exercise, as we come face-to-face with the terrible dilemma of Tosca, sung by the unforgettable Anja Harteros. Staged by Luc Bondy, Puccini’s opera will also benefit from the splendid incarnations of Joseph Calleja as Mario Cavaradossi and Erwin Schrott as Scarpia.

La Traviata is the alpha and omega of Verdi operas. Everything – from the dramatic tension to the musical beauty – dazzles with harmonious proportions. For this production in Munich, the staging by Luc Bondy reveals striking artistic beauty. It is the perfect setting for the staggering Violetta played by Albanian soprano Ermonela Jaho, alongside the majestic Germont by Simon Keenlyside, the wonderful British baritone.

Drawing inspiration from a play by Victorien Sardou and created in Rome in 1990, Tosca is one of the most exciting works in the repertoire. The role of the singer, who risks everything for love, will be interpreted by Anja Harteros, one of the role’s greatest performers at present. By her side, the Mario of Joseph Calleja brims with charm and clarity. We can expect much from his aria “E lucevan le stelle”. In the role of Scarpia, Erwin Schrott captivates us with his on-stage charisma and toxic presence. An exceptional vocal trio with Luc Bondy’s famous staging.
