Il Trovatore & I Masnadieri

Two jewels created
by a young Verdi

This trip offers the quintessence of romantic soul. We will set off to explore the works of artist Caspar Friedrich in the art museums of the Kunstareal. The spectacular Alte Pinakothek presents unforgettable masterpieces by Rubens and Dürer. As for the Neue Pinakothek, it houses magnificent paintings by Klimt and Van Gogh’s famous Sunflowers. Because Munich is synonymous with the good life, we will taste Alpine or Franconian specialities in the best Bavarian restaurants, followed by a tour of the incredible Nymphenburg Palace in the north-west of the city. An excursion to the legendary Neuschwanstein Castle of Ludwig II is also possible.

Over two evenings, the Munich National Theatre will present two jewels created by a young Verdi. The first is the ultra-famous Trouvère, with magnificent staging by Olivier Py and Anja Harteros in the title role. The second is less widely known: I masnadieri based on the play by Schiller; but it boasts the eagerly awaited Diana Damrau in the role of Amalia. Enchanting!

The première of Le Trouvère in 1853 unleashed a historical triumph. According to a journalist of the period, the streets of Rome reverberated for a whole day with the name of
Verdi, commended as “the greatest composer that Italy has ever known”. A nocturnal tragedy with characters devoured by fiery passions and a plot that accumulates
violent deaths, Le Trouvère is the archetype of romantic Italian opera. This Munich production boasts admirable staging by Olivier Py, created in loco in 2013. With décor exuding a
sombre splendour, the French artist transforms unforgettable, nightmarish visions. In the role of Leonora, the great Anja Hartero completes the cast of this sublime story, where larger-than-life personalities are devoured by fiery passions

Created in 1847 in London, I Masnadieri (The Robbers) is one of Verdi’s most beautiful operas. The tone is set with the very dramatic opening. The brilliant plot is filled with
passion and colourful characters struggling with destiny by way of magnificent arias. Backed by powerful choirs, I Masnadieri is an explosive encounter between Verdi and
the German theatre of Schiller. For this pivotal duel, the stage design by Johannes Erath will accompany a truly glamorous couple: Charles Castronovo as Carlo and the
Amalia of Diana Damrau, whose performance in this role is eagerly awaited. In the pit, star conductor Michele Mariotti will take the score back to its delightful bel canto
