Amsterdam
Marina Abramović & the Stopera
From 22 June to 23 June 2024
Price

From €2,390 per person

Amsterdam is unforgettable. Only a few hundred kilometers from Paris, the Dutch capital seduces both those who discover it for the first time, and those who return, certain to find a charm, freedom and splendor that belong only to the beautiful Dutch city. Amsterdam is, of course, its canals, its marvelous gabled houses, its “gezellig” cafes or its unique way of life in its adorable neighborhoods. But far from being a museum city, “Dam” for its friends is astonishing in its cultural effervescence.

During this stay, we invite you to visit two of the city’s artistic jewels: the Stedelijk Museum on a tour around the important retrospective dedicated to Marina Abramović, beacon of performance art, coupled with an evening at the Stopera (which has just been voted best opera company of the year 2023 by many specialized magazines). You will attend Beethoven’s Fidelio performed by the legendary Amsterdam Concertgebouw Orchestra.

SATURDAY 22 JUNE – AMSTERDAM

Free arrival in Amsterdam.

Check-in at your hotel, Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam from 3pm.

Tea Time and introduction to Performance Art with your Expert Speaker.

Private tour of Marina Abramović’s exhibition, after public opening hours.

Of course, there are the Rijks and Van Gogh Museums in Amsterdam, but the Stedelijk (“municipal”) is certainly one of the most inventive and dynamic museums in the Dutch capital. Among its collections are sublime works spanning more than a century of artistic creation. From the Amsterdam School, to functionalism, from the Bauhaus to De Stijl, to the CoBrA and pop-art movement, the institution also has pieces by the most important contemporary artists such as Cindy Sherman, Steve McQueen or Marlene Dumas.

We invite you to enjoy a visit to the exceptional exhibition dedicated to Marina Abramović. In the company of our expert speaker, a specialist in the work of the Serbian artist, we will admire a retrospective covering more than half a century of production. With more than 60 works, including photographs, videos, sculptures, four iconic live performances, and two participatory works, the exhibition takes us from his beginnings in the former Yugoslavia to pioneering performances with his former partner Ulay to the works of his solo practice. Marina Abramović has been a leading figure in performance and body art since the 1970s. An early proponent of the use of the human body in performance, she constantly pushed her limits emotionally and physically, exposing herself to exhaustion, pain, and even the possibility of death.

Dinner at the end of the visit.

Overnight at the hotel.

SUNDAY 23 JUNE – AMSTERDAM

Nicholas Bronlee: Don Pizzaro

Jacquelyn Wagner: Léonore

Anna El-Khashem: Marzelline

Fidelio is Beethoven’s only opera. At once a work of liberation and revolutionary art, an ode to loving fidelity and a dramatic utopia, the work fascinates by its universal scope and its ideal of justice and hope. At the Amsterdam Opera, the staging is entrusted to the Ukrainian director Andriy Zholdak. His visual imagery, full of symbols, is reminiscent of great directors such as Tarkovsky and Bergman, while possessing a political vision necessary in our time. Inspired by a true story of the French Revolution, Beethoven’s sonorities are both powerful and almost religious, which will take advantage of the incredible luxury of the Amsterdam Concertgebouw Orchestra conducted by the great conductor Andrés Orozco-Estrada. The dramatic role of Leonore is played by the radiant soprano Jacquelyn Wagner, while the Florestan by the American tenor Eric Culter crowns a magnificent cast.
